Mason students now have FREE access to TimelyCare – a virtual mental health and well-being platform crafted specifically for college students.

TimelyCare is available for all enrolled students at Mason.

With TimelyCare, Mason students will have access to a multitude of virtual mental health and well-being resources that are free and available 24/7. Find out more about the resources available online at Timelycare.com/gmu or Download the app. Some of these resources include:

• TalkNow: 24/7, on-demand emotional support with a mental health professional to talk about anything, including anxiety, relationships, depression, and school-related stressors.

• Scheduled Counseling: Mason students are eligible for 12 free counseling sessions per year with a mental health professional. Choose the day, time, and mental health provider that works best for you.

• Psychiatry: Scheduled appointments with a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner are available through referral by CAPS, Student Health Services, or a TimelyCare counselor.           Please see more information below.

• Health Coaching: Develop healthy lifestyle behaviors for nutrition, sleep habits, time management, and mindfulness through appointments with a Health Coach.

• Self-Care Content: Visit the Explore page within TimelyCare for guided self-care content.

Below are commonly asked questions about TimelyCare Psychiatry:

Who are TimelyCare psychiatric providers?

Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners.

Who is eligible for treatment through TimelyCare Psychiatry?

Any enrolled Mason student may ask about a referral to a TimelyCare psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner. TimelyCare Psychiatry provides care for many common mental health needs. However, there may be situations where students require more intensive or specialized psychiatric care that cannot be provided through telehealth (such as ADHD, severe eating disorders, or extensive substance use concerns). If this is the case, TimelyCare’s care coordination team (carecoordination@timely.md) will help students find a psychiatric provider in the community.

How much does a TimelyCare Psychiatry visit cost?

There is no cost to enrolled Mason students to meet with a psychiatric provider. The only cost is for medications or any needed laboratory tests.

What medications are TimelyCare psychiatric providers NOT ALLOWED to prescribe?

Because of federal telehealth regulations, TimelyCare psychiatric providers are not able to prescribe controlled substances, which include the following categories of medications:

  • Controlled substance stimulants for ADHD such as: Ritalin, Adderall, Vyvanse, Concerta
  • Benzodiazepines: Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin
  • Opioids/Opiates: Norco, Vicodin, Oxycodone.

If you are in need of psychiatric treatment requiring any of those medications, TimelyCare’s care coordination team (carecoordination@timely.md) will help students find another psychiatric provider.

Do I need to be in counseling in order to see a TimelyCare psychiatric provider?

A student will need to meet with a counselor or provider at either TimelyCare, Counseling and Psychological Services, or Student Health Services for an initial assessment to determine if they are eligible for TimelyCare Psychiatry services. If the student is not eligible, then that counselor or provider will help the student find a psychiatric provider in the community.

If I am interested in TimelyCare Psychiatry, will psychiatry services impact my access to the 12 free counseling sessions each year through TimelyCare?

No. Receiving psychiatry services does not impact the 12 scheduled counseling sessions.

How can I make an appointment with TimelyCare Psychiatry?

There are multiple options to schedule an appointment with TimelyCare Psychiatry.

If a student is eligible for TimelyCare Psychiatry services, they will be provided an access code which will allow the student to easily schedule psychiatry services through the TimelyCare platform. If the student is not eligible, then that counselor or provider will help the student find a psychiatric provider in the community. Below are ways in which students can seek TimelyCare Psychiatry Services:

  1. If a student is seeing a Timelycare counselor, the student can ask their TimelyCare counselor if they are eligible for TimelyCare Psychiatry services.
  2. If a student is seeing a Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) counselor, the student should ask their CAPS counselor if they are eligible for TimelyCare Psychiatry services.
  3. If a student is seeing a provider at Student Health Services (SHS), the student can ask their SHS provider if they are eligible for TimelyCare Psychiatry services.
  4. If a student is seeing an off-campus counselor, the student can schedule an intake appointment with a TimelyCare counselor to discuss if they are eligible for TimelyCare Psychiatry services.
  5. If a student does not have a current counselor, the student can schedule an intake appointment with a TimelyCare counselor to discuss if they are eligible for TimelyCare Psychiatry services.

How do I log in to TimelyCare Psychiatry?

If a student is eligible for TimelyCare Psychiatry services, they will need to schedule a meeting with a TimelyCare counselor, a Counseling and Psychological Services counselor, OR a Student Health Services provider. During the meeting, the student will be provided with an access code that can be added to their TimelyCare account. This will allow the student to easily schedule psychiatry services through the TimelyCare platform.
