Han Yu (She/They) is a Psy.D. candidate in clinical psychology at George Washington University. Han has experience in integrative psychotherapy, as well as psychological assessment to clarify referral questions about learning disorders, ADHD, and behavioral/personality functioning. Han had a diverse caseload in individual therapy and co-led a women’s interpersonal process group at The Center Clinic at GWU. They worked with clients of a wide age range in individual and family therapy at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Having helped many families improve parent-child relationships, they became a Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) certified therapist. At the DC Superior Court’s Child Guidance Clinic, they provided evaluative and therapeutic services to youths involved in the juvenile justice system. Before joining the team here, they offered individual and group therapy to young adults from diverse backgrounds, many of whom identify as queer, at the Capital Center for Psychotherapy and Wellness. Han has interests in intersectionality, trans-inclusive feminism, comprehensive psychological assessment (neuropsych testing & projective tests), LGBTQIAP+ issues, health disparities, trauma, and sociocultural resilience factors.
Han is an integrative clinician with a foundation in psychodynamic theories and case formulation. They use grounding, insight-oriented, relational, and cognitive techniques to support clients in making the best decisions for themselves and their interpersonal relationships. Han has a deep commitment to intersectionality, holistically considering each individual’s privileges and adversities based on their unique identities and social locations. As a therapist, Han is calming, warm, and accepting. Han also values empowering clients and exploring different perspectives to help improve their insights about patterns in their lives. While maintaining a warm presence, Han is a flexible clinician who prioritizes responding to each client’s unique needs, either informed by their clinical judgement or explicitly voiced by the client. Han both provides empathy & support and also thoughtfully challenges your framing and interpretations of an event. Han believes in healing through corrective emotional experiences. They will encourage you to use therapy as a low-risk, safe space to practice what’s difficult in other scenarios, while holding your hand (metaphorically) and providing unconditional positive regard for you as a person.
Han is bilingual in Mandarin Chinese and was born and raised in South China. They graduated from a historically women’s college (now trans & nonbinary inclusive), Bryn Mawr College, with a B.A. in Psychology, and Teachers College, Columbia University, with an M.A. in Developmental Psychology.
