>> Welcome to CAPS. We share this video so that you'll know what to expect when you contact us and meet our staff. When you first come in or call us, you'll be taken care of by one of our friendly administrative support staff members. They'll check in with you and soon after this, a clinician will meet with you briefly to help identify what services would best meet your needs. To be clear, the initial check-in is not therapy. The goal is really to help figure out what is going on right now for you and how we might be able to best support your needs. Just like when you go to any doctor's office, similarly, CAPS will ask for you to fill out some initial paperwork to gather information on your history and the reasons that brought you into CAPS. When coming in to seek service, you have the option to work with a wide range of providers. CAPS has counselors of different genders, providers of color, LGBTQ-plus specialists, trauma specialists, etc. Given the timing of the semester, your availability, and the severity or urgency of your concern, we'll do our best to accommodate student's requests for providers. That being said, should you want to switch providers, you're welcome to request this and when this is possible, we work to accommodate these requests. We also want to remind our campus community that Counseling and Psychological Services is a doctoral training site. We have advanced therapists in training, who provide outstanding services to our students. These therapists in training typically have the most availability, and students can access services much more quickly when they work with them. Therapists in training are supervised by licensed clinical staff and their psychotherapy sessions are recorded as part of their supervision. These recordings which are required by the accrediting association for the training program, are safeguarded and destroyed soon after they've been reviewed by the licensed supervisor. And are used as a way to make sure CAPS is providing the best clinically sound multicultural competent care. CAPS provides short-term individual and group psychotherapy treatment and we're usually able to support students for the length of one semester, and in some cases longer. We typically meet with students every two or three weeks. If you're needing more support than this and you're looking to be seen in an ongoing capacity, we'll support you in getting connected to a treatment provider in the community. Additionally, group therapy is one of the most effective and primary treatment modalities for college students and CAPS offers several groups each semester. CAPS has three different group rooms in our center. CAPS sees a lot of Mason students and provides an inclusive welcoming space for every student on campus. We appreciate that Mason students are diverse and are cognizant of the unique life challenges that our students face. It's CAPS mission to be supportive of all students. We hope you remember to call or visit us if you're seeking support or have any questions about our services. We look forward to seeing you and appreciate your willingness to trust us with your care.
